Starting January 8, 2025, passport holders from 49 non-European countries, including the U.S. and Canada, will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter or transit through the United Kingdom (UK).
The ETA will serve as the UK’s travel authorization and pre-departure security process, ensuring that travelers are pre-screened before entering the country and compliant with UK security measures.
Starting November 27, Citizens from the U.S., Canada and other non-European countries can apply for the ETA through its app or online. The cost of the ETA is 10 euros (approximately $17), plus a service fee.
Once approved, the ETA will be valid for multiple entries over the next two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows for short visits (up to six months per visit) for purposes such as tourism, business or short-term study during this period.
The ETA is required for all types of travel into the UK, including air, sea and land (such as trains), as well as for transit passengers. However, the ETA only applies to the UK and does not grant access to Ireland or other European countries. It will be linked to a valid passport and travelers must reapply for the ETA if their passport expires.
It’s important to note that travelers with a valid UK international student visa or other long-term visas are exempt from this requirement. These individuals will not need to apply for the ETA.

Travelers are encouraged to apply early and stay informed as the January 2025 deadline approaches.
